ACL surgery: Post-Operative care

With more and more people trying to be active and doing physical exercises, the rate of injury to the bone and the joints has also increased. One of the most common injuries is the tearing of the ligaments of the joints.

While it sounds simple, most of the times, it may end up making the person less mobile and in pain. In severe cases, surgery may be the only viable option then for effective recovery.

However, once the ACL surgery is performed, things do not go back to normal immediately but rather it is the first step in a long road to get a person to their normal physical movements.

ACL surgery post-operative care focuses primarily on rehabilitation in the best way possible and trying to bring back the body to its original strength. All this, however, needs to be done in a safe and regimented manner so as to eliminate the risk of further physical injury.

Some of the common points to remember after the ACL surgery are:

  • The most important thing is to keep patience and not hope for quick results. One needs to realize that this is not any ordinary wound that will heal in time but rather, the surgery is the beginning of recovery.
  • Rest is the most effective means to get better, especially immediately after surgery.
  • Particularly for the knee, it is of utmost importance to keep it straight till the surgeon allows bending, however uncomfortable it may be.

  • This will give time to the ligament to heal properly, while resting the joint in its natural shape.
  • Knee brace can also be worn for added comfort and protection.
  • Physical therapy only under a professional guidance is the safest way to achieve positive results.
  • It is as much of a mental challenge as a physical one. Hence, the most important thing is to not get disheartened and stick to the program.
  • Even if it takes longer than usual for complete rehabilitation, one needs to follow each and every guideline, all the time.

There should be a gradual return to a normal lifestyle while taking all necessary precautions for even walking till the doctor approves of it.
